So, how'd I get this job anyway?

I've been getting lots of questions about how I got my job at ArenaNet making creatures. The two main things that got me the job were that ArenaNet was still small and unknown so it wasn't being flooded with resumes, the second thing was that I was unemployed and decided to start promoting myself with the internet.

This is the page that got their attention.

They took a risk with me, and I took a risk moving away from everything to a tiny company that could easily have gone under in a few months time. Sometimes that kind of stuff works out very well, but I've also been on the unfortunate end of similar risks. Don't be afraid things won't work out, it's not that scary when they don't.

Other factors on getting that dream job that bite you in the ass sometimes: Luck, Stubbornness, A big mouth, Sticking it out through the bad times, Knowing when enough is enough and getting the Hell out of Dodge, Curiosity, Knowing a guy who might know a guy, Art forums, and being a NERD about something a little practical(this can grate on people).

(I actually lived under the Hollywood sign for a bit. It was a constant reminder of broken dreams while unemployed. Never surrender!)

Holy crap, I had no idea you worked for ANet.

How often do they toss their nets out fishing for new talent?

As soon as I commented, I went back to your '07 posts, and sure enough, you put up EotN art. When I first found your blog, I had only gone back a month or so from what was then your most current post...

Eh... I can relate. I'm living in Singapore with my wife. She has a crappy job that she hates, and I've been out of work for 8 months. We're starting to barely skate by on bills. I finally convinced her that it's probably time we move to the Philippines (where she's from) and try something else. (getting the hell outta Dodge)
