New sketchbook innards

I finally completed my last sketchbook! One of my favorite things is drawing the inside cover of a brand new book. This one has owls. I also write how to contact me info in case my book gets lost on these pages.

Faun Color (as requested)

I think the fox is fading further into the background than I'd like. He's a bit lost. I made a few attempts to draw out his face so that he is more important, but it looked awkward. I may give it another try later. I'm also looking at this way too much. I'm begining to cringe looking at the positioning of the Faun's legs. The attitude is all there, but the motion doesn't work the way I'd imagined it.

Cute Face Ratio

I think I was looking at my earrings in the mirror when I made a weird observation. The space immediately beneath the ear in relation to the lip line corresponds with what I call ultimate cute face. It's the vapid happy face of popular character merchandise(Hello Kitty and anime sidekicks). The eyes of the cute face should not be larger in diameter than would pass the outside edge of the ear. The top of the mouth line should not pass the line between the lips of the mouth.

I made a couple of examples from images I found online.

I haven't tested it out in images yet, but I believe the larger eyed version of the cute face follows this set of rules: The diameter of the eyes must fall between the outer edge of the face and the inner most corner of the eye white. The eyes must not fall lower than the bottom of the nose or higher than the top of the eye white. The mouth remains the same as in the small eye example. Like these guys:

I'm pretty sure there is some simple math going on in there, but I couldn't tell you.

Tim the Charr gets a Xmas outfit

During the 2008 PAX a very special creature was given to ArenaNet by Purple Llama,
Tim the Charr!

A few months ago Lisa dropped hints my way that Mr. Tim could use some holiday spirit. I couldn't resist trying my new sewing skills out, and it also seemed like an excellent beginning clothing design project. I stuck around late at work and took all kinds of measurements and drew little diagrams. Then I began construction of a costume that I hoped would fit him when I finally brought it in. It was sort of an accident, but I like that the final outfit looks a bit Dervishy.

Tim the Charr gets ready for Wintersday!

Now that I'm all warmed up, maybe I will try doing some cosplay. :) I've always wanted to enter the Masquerade at the San Diego Comicon.
